"...an imagination that just won't quit." (Michele Callahan, Author of the Time Walker series)
This delightful science fiction paranormal romance is a very entertaining introduction to a new series. The combination of futuristic concepts with the very pragmatic heroine is a wonderful combination, especially since she is so adept at confounding beings from ‘more advanced’ races. The weird and wonderful situation she finds herself in is both frightening and a tribute to her strong character, as she finds a way to somehow alter circumstances to benefit herself. The remarkable events that allow her to both capture the hearts of the very alien males she is forced into company with, her less than savory habits (ahem, including kleptomania, lol) which nonetheless come in handy, as does the rather capacious bag that is included in her assets. This is a delightfully tongue-in-cheek science fiction story that offers a different take on many of the tabloid conventions ascribed to interactions between Earth’s inhabitants and beings from other galaxies and one can’t help cheering for the heroine, snickering at the befuddled males, and breathlessly waiting for the next exciting adventure. I look forward to many more great stories in this universe!
“Choosing Riley” by S.E. Smith is Book 1 in the ‘Sarafin Warriors’ series and centers around Riley St. Claire, a feisty bail bondsman in Denver who gets kidnapped by aliens and is forced to choose a male from a selection of beings forced to work in the mines. Causing much consternation, Riley chooses five! Little does she realize, she has chosen Vox d’Rojah, a couple of his crew, and two other aliens. As ruling king of the Sarafin, Vox is used to being obeyed, and when the female he immediately identifies as his mate defies him, he is shocked…in more ways than one. Can a cat-shifter and a decidedly determined human female come to an understanding both can agree to? Only if they can survive long enough to find out…and that doesn’t take into account the others who are trying to capture or destroy them.

What do you get when you take one part Xena Princess Warrior, add one part Terminator and mix well with a Valley Girl? You get the one and only Riley St. Clare, an original from Denver Colorado, of course. In Choosing Riley, the first book in the Sarafin Warriors series by author S. E. Smith, you are introduced to Riley. She is an eccentric, lovable character that you will never forget! The ruling King of the Sarafin, Vox d’Rojah never stood a chance!
While procuring crystals on a Valdier spaceport, Vox is taken prisoner and sent to work on a mining asteroid controlled by the Antrox. This is where the fun really starts! Riley is given the option to choose a male as a mate, but the ones she doesn’t will be used as food! What’s a girl to do? Why choose all five of course because Grandma Pearl didn’t raise a fool. One of Riley’s five perspective mates just happens to be Vox and two of his warriors, let the training begin! Sparks fly and humor flows as Riley and Vox clash.

From the Author
Riley came about from the exploits of one of my friends who had been a bailbonds man (woman). I couldn't help but think 'what if' someone with an over the top personality was kidnapped by aliens. What would she be like? Riley St. Claire from Denver, Colorado was born. She was one of those who always saw things a little differently, had a heart as big as Texas and a mouth to go with it. I knew I needed an alien male who was the perfect mate for someone like her. But, who? She would eat most males up and spit them out without even realizing it if they weren't tough enough. Yet, if they were too tough, she would shy away. How could I find that perfect balance of tough and yet vulnerable at the same time? The answer came in the shape of a cat-shifter named Vox. He was tough as nails on the outside yet was totally enchanted with Riley. He was willing to learn, not change, and adapt, not give in. He was patient yet still macho. He was perfect. The supporting cast of characters only draw you in deeper as you see just how big and soft a heart Riley has for those she loves. She is willing to do anything, including die, to protect those she considers her new family; whether they are a two-headed lizard named Fred or a huge lime green blob named Bob. No one is safe when Riley is around.

Not For Me
By lilradrad
From my rating, I obviously HATED this book. It started off fun but soon enough Riley annoyed the heck out of me.
What I Liked:
❤ The beginning of the book was pretty interesting, 9% in I was liking it already, sure that this book can only get any better. I liked how sassy Riley was and that scene where she chose all 5 aliens as mates just so they won't be turned into alien food was LOL funny.
❤ I tend to be more forgiving of insta-lust/love when it comes to shifter romances because of the whole 'Mate' thing so I wasn't irritated when Vox wanted her on first sight but it was funny how Riley didn't just accept him in a snap, like most heroines in shifter romances.
❤ Riley had sass and I like that she was just not a damsel in distress in a literally alien territory. She knew how to protect herself and she doesn't cower to anyone.
What I Didn't Like (Hated, really)
Warning: Spoilers
☹ Soon enough though, Riley's sassiness turned from hilarious to grating. Her stubbornness started to annoy and frustrate me and I started to question why Vox would want such a difficult female who kept on rejecting him.
☹ I started to HATE Riley. She is extremely insecure and she covers it up with bad attitude and horrible manners. Although she said she's accepted that she's a bigger woman, her attitude suggests that she still hates her body and gets overly defensive when Vox compliments her thinking that he's making fun of her. I wanted to scream every time she insisted that she is not fat but has a "maturely" figure. NO ONE IS CALLING YOU FAT BUT YOURSELF. SHUT UP ABOUT IT ALREADY.
☹ There was a few floating questions regarding this whole alien world. She was captured a week before she got "mated" to the five aliens. In their apartments, after a few days, she was using her iPad. I know they were able to charge her gadgets after they escaped but how the hell did it stay charged for more than a week?! And on that note, do all these aliens speak english?? How did they understand each other? If I missed something here please feel free to clear this up for me.
☹ Riley was so stubborn it took until 74% of the book to finally stop fighting Vox and accept that she's his mate. Seventy-four percent of Riley annoying the heck out of me with her constant temper tantrums. By that time I wanted to get in the book to just tell Vox to give up because she is just not worth it.
☹ Vox finally told her that he loved her, which btw was clear as day EVEN without the words since he was showing that by his actions ever since they've met. So him telling her he loves her? Believable. Telling him she loves him back instantly right after was not. It felt like she was just so overjoyed that a man--any man would love her, she just had to reciprocate. Her feelings for him was completely shallow...very much like her.
☹ When they finally did get together, there was still more misunderstanding because she was insisting on marriage and she was hurt that Vox wouldn't marry her. Did she forget that she's in an alien planet and this certain custom might be nonexistent for them? HELLO STUPID FEMALE! WHY NOT ASK YOUR ALIEN MATE IF HE KNOWS WHAT MARRIAGE IS BEFORE THROWING YOUR TEMPER TANTRUMS FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME!
☹ OR BETTER YET, HOW ABOUT MAKE AN EFFORT IN LEARNING THE ALIEN CUSTOMS OF THE MAN YOU "LOVE" INSTEAD OF EXCESSIVELY WHINE ABOUT STUPID THINGS LIKE HOW HE KEEPS ON RUINNG YOUR STUPID JACKETS!?
Overall, I did not enjoy this book because I hated Riley. She's hot headed, selfish, classless and all because she has low self-esteem and so insecure of her body. I hate females who uses bad attitude to hide their insecurities. That doesn't make her feisty, it makes her a B.
*** I'm in a minority here so don't let my review discourage you into reading this book. I know it has quite a fan base and I respect their reasons for loving this book even if I do not agree with the general opinion. ***

Laughing Out Loud Fun
By Roxanne Winn
This is the first time I've written a review but had to on this book. I haven't laughed so hard while reading in a long time. Loved Riley & Vox. I have the complete series and have enjoyed them all. Can't wait for Viper's story and look forward to trying her new series starting with Indiana Wild.

Hilarious Read... Great Characters... Loved it!
By C. Wilson
This was my favorite book so far by this author. Riley's character is hilarious! She is cute, funny, brave and lovable. I don't see anything trashy about her. I hate that a woman can't speak her mind and cuss without being seen as trashy. That's some bull ish! This heroine was definitely classy. She took care of herself and did not tolerate disrespect in any way. Even though she was frightened she couldn't let those aliens see that. She had to keep them guessing and throw them off which is why I think this book was very well written. And I love the fact that she didn't completely give in to Vox immediately. I hate those heroines who just melt at the first sight of the hero and fall right into his arms by the 5th page and then he is just sooo irresistible that her panties just melt right off of her every time she sees him and she can't say no to him. Riley gave Vox hell and made him not only want her more but respect her in the process. I loved it! But I would like to know. What in the heck are Fred and Bob's real names? Riley just picked those names for them off the top of her head and then everyone just started calling them that. lol Anyway 5 stars S. E. Smith. You keep these wonderful books coming!
