Megan Mulry writes sexy, modern, romantic fiction. She graduated from Northwestern University and then worked in publishing, including positions at The New Yorker and Boston magazine. After moving to London, Mulry worked in finance and attended London Business School. Mulry is a member of RWA. Fun summer read

If the Shoe Fits is the follow up to Megan Mulry's A Royal Pain. This books centers on the relationship of Devon Heyworth and Sarah James. Devon is not the heir but the spare to the 19th Duke of Northrup and has spent his life cultivating an image of an empty headed dilettante barely working as an architect. In reality he is a brilliant mathematician and inventor. Sarah is the only daughter of a stuffy department store CEO who has become well known as the designer/owner of a trendy shoe company.
When the two meet at the wedding of Max (Devon's brother) and Bronte (Sarah's best friend), the attraction is instantaneous and combustible. The couple has a torrid short term affair, and then agrees that they will move on to their real lives. This proves harder than they thought and they go back and forth on seeing each other and having big blowups and ending it. They are likeable people and we want to see them be together.
What I liked about this book was that both characters were evenly matched in many ways. Both of them have success and fame but underneath they have doubts and insecurities about where they belong in their family and relationship areas. There are situations that start with misunderstandings but aren't dragged out to the point where the reader gets frustrated. They clear up the misunderstandings but the repercussions are what keep the couple apart, which is much more realistic. These are two people who need to open themselves up to not always having the control and be able to move on past it or the relationship will not work. And I so wanted them to work it out.
Having enjoyed the first book with Bronte and Max, it was nice to see more of their lives and of their families. There were a couple of hints of who might be the subject of future books. I'm rooting for Abby to be the next Heyworth to find her happiness.

If The Shoe Fits by Megan Mulry is the follow up story to A Royal Pain by Megan Mulry. At times the antics of Devon and Sara are richly humorous and at others, they are so sexy they threaten to combust. This is the perfect romance for your summer beach bag!
Devon Heyworth is the younger brother of the 19th Duke of Northup. He has gone through life not taking anything too seriously. He learned at a very young age to hide his brilliance from the world. He is the best man in his brother's upcoming wedding. While at the rehearsal dinner, he meets the lovely Sara James, who is to be the maid of honor. Devon is instantly attracted to Sara and he strikes up a friendly flirtation with her. When Sara promises to be a "sure thing," Devon is at a loss for words, but his active imagination takes over.
Sara is a beautiful American entrepreneur who designs shoes for a living. She finds Devon to be a handsome rake who she is willing to give up her virginity to. Devon seems like the perfect candidate to have a fling with and possibly to be a port of call when she returns to London on business. This situation suits Devon just fine because he has no intentions of ever losing his heart to any woman.
When Devon comes to the states for a visit, Sara invites him to stay at her place. Things are going well between the two until Devon spots Sara exiting a car with another man and becomes jealous. It is apparent that Devon has invested more of his feelings into their encounters than either he or Sara are comfortable with. Do these two stand a chance at love when they are both so set against any kind of serious relationship?
If The Shoe Fits is a rollicking, laugh out loud, feel good novel that will leave you with a smile on your face. Megan Mulry has cleverly crafted an unforgettable tale of substance that proves that love will always prevail in the end. I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy today!

I love MMulry's voice, her humor is much like her British aristocrats, dry with a twist of American. It's smart without being snobby and her characters are self-possessed, authentic, very matter-of-fact and not exaggerated versions of the real thing. Despite being wealthy, Devon and Sarah make obscene gestures to exclaim for privileged their lives are, mentions of wealth are done sparingly if only to paint the setting or to reinforce a point. MMulry focused on making her characters accessible in their folly and that was the first thing that stood out for me.
There was a hint of role reversals and tasting one's own medicine too. Sarah James is a virgin who decided to give up her V-card to Devon if only to get that inconvenience out of the way. MMulry didn't make a big production of it though I have to wonder how much of a playboy Devon is for not noticing that he popped Sarah's cherry. I love Sarah, she's level-headed, didn't cling to Devon, kept it almost business like as far as carrying on their fling is concerned. She didn't have expectations nor was she in denial about her feelings either. She was just going with the flow in a normal and rational way, no laid out plans to snag the eligible bachelor, no candles and bubble baths. It was simply recreational for her and as Devon is a delicious flirt and an accomplished lover, their sizzling rendezvous was even more enjoyable to read.
Devon, the consummate player, is not only gorgeous but very stylish and intelligent with a sparkling personality to boot. I find his misconceptions about American women funny and his situation with Sarah a little karmic. For the first time he's chasing a girl and not the other way around, getting clingy, emotionally attached and obviously falling for Sarah. I loved how he rationalizes his IP "stalking" under loose technicalities but it eventually caught up with him and he got a big bite in the ass for it. Nonetheless he is simply adorable and his easy-going attitude is very endearing.
The secondary characters kept the story light and continuously interesting. My favorite Sarah's grandmother, Letitia, and her aristocratic ways, doesn't want to be bother with bourgeoisie tasks. Now the conflict is what made this romantic comedy a 4-cauldron rating for me. When reading chick-lit, the conflict usually revolves around emotional awkwardness and rude awakenings. Here it wasn't quite so, I thought I know what the breakdown is going to be and I was pleasantly surprised that MMulry gave me something else. It still involves the next step in Sarah and Devon's relationship but it goes beyond simple emotional histrionics and verbal bitch slaps. Thank you for giving me something out of the box Ms. Mulry.
Though IF THE SHOE FITS is a sequel of sorts to MMulry's other novel, it can read as stand-alone and now I want to backtrack and read A Royal Pain. I had a lovely time getting lost in MMulry's world and I really appreciate her narrative, it's really smart without being snobbish and like I've said, she is funny! So if you like Kinsella and Cabot, you'll adore Megan Mulry, add her to your chick-lit collection!
